Any desire in me was sucked right down the drain with the force of a tornado. Sitting under a tree with my amazing mate straddling my lap, I stared into her eyes, wondering if there was a way I could get out of telling her what she deserved to know.

The waterfall spray floated in the air, creating iridescent rainbows against the dark boulders. I could toss her into the water then let her drown me, but that wouldn’t be enough to distract her.

I sighed, trying to keep the sadness from my eyes. My mother always told me she could read my every emotion through my eyes. I’d tried to change that, but I felt so strongly, so passionately, that I simply couldn’t contain it all inside.

Chelsea straightened on my lap. “We don’t—”

“No,” I said, holding her in place. “We do need to do this. You are my mate, my only love. I trust you with my deepest secrets that could bring about my death. You deserve and need to know all this so you make the right choice in deciding if you’ll stay with me.”

Her quiet gasp drew my eyes to hers. Yes, she had a choice and I wanted her to know that. Just because we were mates didn’t mean the human half of her would like me. That was the part I had to win over with honesty and devotion. I knew I wasn’t worthy of her.

“Will you rest against me while I tell you everything?” I asked. When she nodded, I scooted her forward on my thighs until her body leaned on mine, her head laying over my heart.

“It’s not a long story, but it’s hard for me, the bad butt dark elf guard that I am...” I got a smile out of her, “to admit to being vulnerable. Others find out stuff like this and they will eat you for breakfast. The tough killer façade has to become a part of you even if it’s not who you are.”

Lord, I was stalling with this dragon poop. Just spit it out, boy.

“My parents that you met are not my birth mother and father.” I felt her body jerk slightly. “My father—Klaern—told me he was on the mountain working when a woman with long black hair appeared from a mist and handed him a baby boy. She told him the mother was dead and the birth father didn’t want him.” My voice cracked on the last four words.

Pain that I’d kept bottled up for centuries spread in my chest. I squeezed Chelsea to me to prove she was there. That she hadn’t left me yet. I lowered my head to bury my face in her hair. God, I hated this. Why, after so darn long, did this still hurt so much?

I waited until I could speak strongly again. “Klaern’s wife had just suffered a miscarriage, so he saw no reason to not take the child if there was no better choice. The woman said to cover the boy’s duality with elf magic and his life would be blessed.
